Smasher

Features

Smasher cleans up Mac OS X font cache issues. To work properly, Mac OS X must activate and cache fonts. When these OS caches work, everything is fine, but when they don't, documents become unusable. There are several common results: text appears and reflows incorrectly, font menus don't refresh correctly, applications display false corruption warnings, PDF and PostScript files generate incorrectly, and applications become sluggish or unstable. When any of these situations occur, a good first step in troubleshooting the problem is to have Smasher clean your the caches.

Some Mac OS X applications from Quark, Adobe, and Microsoft maintain their own font caches that may need cleaning as well. Smasher can help with these font caches, too.

With Smasher, figuring out what's in a collection of font suitcases has never been easier. Just drag folders and files into Smasher's left pane to expose all suitcases and fonts. After performing basic integrity checks on fonts, Smasher presents their contents by suitcase, family, font, and style. With Smasher, see what fonts and styles are complete and uncorrupted, visually compare the content of suitcases, and select individual styles and preview them.

After selecting font families or styles, just click the Smash button and Smasher creates new suitcase files that are ready for use in Mac OS X. These new suitcases allow OS X to open and close individual fonts and styles as needed rather than wasting resources by opening large, unwieldy OS 9 suitcases.

Smasher exposes the content of suitcases and identifies font file formats clearly, allowing the user to separate Type 1 fonts from TrueType fonts and create new, simpler, and more efficient suitcases.

When a Type 1 font is smashed with Smasher, it automatically matches the correct printer font with the bitmapped screen font — ensuring that documents print to hardcopy and PDF correctly.
